Well hubby definitely thinks I'm responsible for the demise of his iPod so any suggestions as to how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

It's an iPod nano 7th generation.

Yesterday I added some more music to it via ITunes which I have on a laptop.

Al went ok however when I unplugged the iPod from the laptop (when it was ok to disconnect) it switched off immediately. I assumed it simply needed charged so left it charging.

Today hubby took it away to use and came back tonight with a non functioning ipod:(

When you switch it on the apple sign flashes for a split second then disappears/switches off. I've tried pressing wake/sleep and the little round button together but makes no difference.

I then tried to access it via the laptop however I firstly received a message saying the device driver needed installed than another saying the device is unplugged so clearly the laptop isn't recognising it.
While connected to the laptop the apple logo continues to flash off intermittently.

I'm a bit lost as to what to try next so would welcome advice. I admit it doesn't look good however I have no idea what I did yesterday which may have caused the problem!

Reset instructions here if not already tried https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204307

To reset your iPod nano (7th generation), press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button until the screen goes dark. After a few seconds, you'll see the Apple logo and then the Home screen.

If you still need help, follow these steps:
    1. Plug your iPod into a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
You can also plug your iPod into your computer. Make sure that the computer is on and isn't set to go to sleep.
    2. Try to reset your iPod again.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Sadly I'd been through those options. I can only get the apple logo to appear if I plug into an electrical socket and cannot get the iPod to move from the logo or reset. As soon as I unplug the socket the device switches off and will not turn on again. The battery wS fully charged so that's not the issue.

I think I will just have to accept that I've inadvertently done something to it which has caused it to fail completely. Looks like a new iPod and then the challenge of getting the really old music which is on mine to the new one without purchasing software. That's a problem for later I think:o

    Looks like a new iPod

Do yourself a favour and get a FiiO, Cowon, or similar.

No faffing around with iTunes, flexibility to copy music in both directions, and a host of other advantages.

Have you tried putting it into diagnostic mode (needs all four buttons) as detailed here:

It sounds like either the device is stuck in some boot loop or it has had a hardware failure but either way simply removing it from the PC particularly after getting the notification it was safe to disconnect shouldn't have done any damage to the device so it's not your fault.

I've not worked on a recent Nano but there doesn't seem to be any system to allow the firmware to be reloaded onto the device from a PC.

This is incorrect, when your non-Apple device fails you rubbish that brand and buy an Apple device then when the Apple device fails you don't rubbish Apple and instead buy a newer, shinier Apple device.

No, I don't get it either...long term Cowon J3 fan and dismayed the Plenue D which looks a great successor and supposed to be dispatched today has been delayed :(

OP - just on the off chance can you try connecting the iPod to another computer. I've seen this before and connecting to another computer allowed the iPod to be detected and restored - once restored it then worked fine on the original computer (albeit completely erased but saved having to buy a new iPod).

It's some sort of obscure issued caused by the Apple Mobile Device Driver on the original computer - you can troubleshoot directly on the original computer (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204095 - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/ht203188) but it can be a long winded process so usually easier to simply test via another PC first.

I wasn't being serious, I entirely agree - just always puzzles me that people are quick to slate a non-apple device when it fails yet when an apple device fails instead (even very prematurely) you go straight ahead and buy another.

Tried the four button per the video but no joy. Going to see if I can find a friend with another laptop that I can try with before I take a hammer to it.

Thanks for all the suggestions though.
