Landlord installed coin meters - how much to remove?

Hi

I am looking at buying an ex-student let, and turning it into our family house, and I was wondering what was a reasonable amount to expect for an NICEIC registered electrician to charge to remove coin meters, per unit. So I know how much to budget for.

They were installed by a landlord via an electrician (I hope!), they take £1 coins, they were not installed by the electric board (or whatever they are called these days) the electrics are all on one system/circuit board/meter thing in the downstairs living room, not separate meters. Can anyone advise me what to expect ?
Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • I'd get a spark to check the electrics before purchase to give you an idea, and ensure the seller will give you the necessary keys for access to the meter(s) by making a recorded request by your solicitor. The meters should be simple to replace (you're essentially replacing a switch with a straight bit of cable) but there are lots of variables - for example if you didn't get the keys to the meter you'd may need to bypass any tamperproofing to rip/cut it from the wall and potentially cause some damage to existing cabling which may need to be put right, or the meter could be installed in a questionable way and necessitate chasing out plaster for a new cable run, or it may just be a case of inserting a backbox, faceplace and a couple of wago connectors.

Costs could be £40 for an hours work and materials for two meters, or much more for a single meter depending on how it's been installed.

Just for a laugh...and as long as you've got the keys...I'd leave them in the kids bedrooms and give them a £1 weekly allowance which they can either choose to spend on electricity or anything else of their choosing. Imagine how little electricity they would use. They would actually turn the lights off and turn the XBOX/Playstation off to save the pennies so they can play. £52 a year should be enough for 1 bedroom.

Seriously though it shouldn't be that hard to remove.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

HA!! I have 4 kids, that would go down like a lead balloon, the xbox would end up in the living room and I would be hiding in my bedroom to get away from the awful music. Role reversal. :rotfl:
