    So an update. Did my MOT this morning. The guy in charge of the test told me that there was at least 12 months left but that I would have had to check the tyres every week for cracks for the white layer underneath. These started to appear on the outer side of the tyre as well. I didn't fail the MOT.

    The tyres got changed a few minutes ago (£90 for a pair from tyresonthedrive, replaced them with Delinte). They were the original ones on the car, from 2007! So no wonder did they fail after 9 years. Also the correct pressure according to the chaps is 32PSI.

    Look for a 4-digit on the wheel to determine the date of production of the tyre. So 4113 = 41st week of 2013

    Good advice from the tester, and a good decision to change them anyway at that sort of age - the whole "5 year" thing is a bit OTT but, after nearly a decade, they certainly wouldn't have been at their best.

    Still, interesting to note that, despite popular belief, you hadn't actually fallen off the road with them yet ;)
