pregnancy/miscarriage advice.

Hi,
I am about 4 weeks pregnant. I have been bleeding for approx 2 weeks. (Tested just over a week ago had a negative test, tested 2 days ago was positive) so I'm fairly certain I'm 4 weeks.
I went to hospital yesterday as have had lower left abdo pain and was worried about ectopic. Although she found out I had a UTI so that could potentially be the cause of the pain. However they insisted on scanning me. When she said there's nothing there your having a miscarriage but come back in 2 weeks to confirm it. They then prescribed me trimethoprim for the UTI.
When I got home I read that I shouldn't take them if there's any chance or pregnancy, but as I'm still testing positive I don't feel comfortable taking them, so I went GP this morning to change my prescription. He asked for a urine sample. So I did that and he said sorry the test is negative. Then a minute later he said it might be positive. He's requested me to have a blood test. He said if the blood test is negative he will refer me as it's a 4th miscarriage.
Has anyone had any experience of this?
Sorry for all the rambling but I'm just out of my mind at the moment and can't really think straight.

You need to trust the medical professional - if they say its gone, its gone. Take the meds for the UTI (which can get nasty if untreated). If your body still has HCG (pregnancy hormone) in it but no pregnancy because you've had a MC, which is expelled through urine, then a test will show as positive still. You had a scan which showed no viable pregnancy. That should be enough to put your mind at rest.
If you want to wait until you've had a blood test, then you can do so, it is your choice, but the UTI will only cloud your head (infections do that) and cause you pain.
I've had 14 MC so far, and although it sucks big time, you have to trust the medical professionals - they see this day in, day out, and although they can come across as cold, they have to do their job without emotional entanglement.
I think you might want to see someone about this though, from a MH point of view. 4 MC is hard, and sometimes you just need someone to whinge at - CBT is usually available.0 -
Take the ABs .. they are regularly prescribed in pregnancy, I've had them numerous times for UTI's.. the alternative is what?? Pain, risk of kidney infection and damage..
The pregnancy has almost certainly ended, I'd trust that based on the scan and even if it hasn't at 4 weeks it isnt getting anything from your blood stream so it totally isolated so the ABs would have no effect. You've been bleeding since just after you ovulated which seems very strange..
Take the ABs and go back and ask for a referral to recurrent miscarriage consultant and discuss that with them.. bleeding starting at ovulation is not normal!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I'm really sorry to hear that you are going through this OP. I don't think people are allowed to give medical advice on here (I learned that the hard way when I suffered a miscarriage back in 2010) but ultimately only you can decide whether you feel comfortable to take the tablets or not.
I've known people to be told they've miscarried but then a scan a few weeks later shows their baby is growing healthily, and conversely I've had friends think everything is fine only to learn they have miscarried.
I really hope that your baby is ok OP. Big hugs xx0 -
if you are 4 weeks nothing would be seen on ultrasound (possibly a thickened endometrium) - most early pregnancy units don't scan till 6 weeks as they know odds are they won't see anything (you may get it at 5 weeks and something)0

I didn't want to read and not reply OP.
If you're not comfortable with taking the ABs ask if they can change them for some which are pregnancy friendly.0 -
And as I said, these are routinely prescribed in pregnancy.
antibiotics are routinely prescribed in pregnancy, but trimethoprim is not (especially 1st trimester), co-amoxiclav tends to be first line
I would speak to the pharmacist when it comes to medication intereactions, it's a double check with the doctor who prescribes them, and this is a doctor who has told you that you have miscarried (IMHO prematurely as an ultrasound at this stage is pointless) so who may not have ensured that it is a safe antibiotic0 -
Hi, thanks everyone for your advice.
Doctor changed my antibiotics to Cefadroxil which I am much more comfortable with taking.
My blood test came back positive. So my doctor has asked me to get it done again.
The bleeding still worrys me but it's still fairly light so I'm trying to feel positive but it's hard.
I believe I may be a little bit earlier than I thought as I looked up what would hopefully be my due date and that put me at 3w6d yesterday so hoping it was just too early to see anything on the scan. Would have been 3w4d at the scan.0 -
Can't help but start to feel a bit positive.
Hcg levels are rising. And a clearblue digi just showed 2-3 weeks which matches my dates.
I've got all fingers and toes crossed for my scan next week x0 -
Yay! That is great news!
I always find it easiest to expect the worst with pregnancy, then if everything is fine it's amazing!!
I had two missed miscarriages at 12 then 9 weeks, the latter having seen a heart beat at 7 weeks. Both resulted in a D&C to havr the remains removed.
When pregnant again, I went to the 12 week scan expecting no heart beat again, only to be told there were two heart beats!!
My twins are now 11 weeks old and adorable. (Not to mention hard work!!)
My fingers are crossed for you, but never give up hope. xShould've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Sounds good
3+4 is generally far too early to see.
It's generally considered you need hcg levels of 1,000 to see anything on scan (thats just for the sac) and over 10,000 to see a heartbeat
These are averages
hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :
3 weeks LMP: 5 – 50 mIU/ml.
4 weeks LMP: 5 – 426 mIU/ml.
5 weeks LMP: 18 – 7,340 mIU/ml.
6 weeks LMP: 1,080 – 56,500 mIU/ml.
7 – 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 – 229,000 mIU/ml.
9 – 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 – 288,000 mIU/ml.
13 – 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 – 254,000 mIU/ml.
So even if you were top end of the HCG levels it wouldn't have shown up0
