My own requirements would be warm weather and a proper legal system whereby property ownership is recognised (so that kinda rules out Spain and Portugal).
There needs to be no terrorism or acute crime or political coup risk now or plausibly (so no north Africa, Gulf, West Indies or Thailand).
There needs to be no expropriation risk now or plausibly (so no south Africa or Turkey).
Taxes must be low or reasonably avoidable.
More than one place is permissible. It must be permissible to just move there.
I'm thinking Malta and Singapore.
Any other ideas? Is anyone else looking at this?

I'd buy a smaller house round the corner and stay living near people I like.0

Malta is too near to potential trouble spots for my liking. I love the idea of Italy, with its beautiful sites and people, but it has its problems and it could become extremely problematic once its economy tanks.
I rather like Australia. It's a beautiful country, with friendly people. Also New Zealand is lovely. However, I would be a bit afraid of living in those places forever, given that it could get quite boring if you are used to a 'busy' country.
I also think parts of Britain are incredibly beautiful – and I don't really mind cold weather…0 -

A very timely thread, as we have very recently started thinking about this, one of the problems with being married is the compromise that comes with it. If it was just down to me, I would have had a closer look at Malta, the Canary Islands, Madeira, Spain and Portugal, all are close enough to have friends over for holidays, but my wife doesn't want to move there (full time).
At the moment we are considering the IOM in the summer months as our country of residence, combined with wintering in Spain and/or the Algarve (easy to take our dog with us without putting him in the hold of a plane). Southern Spain, somewhere near Cadiz, also has opportunities to visit other places with our dog too (i.e. Morocco, the Canary Islands etc.). It is early days yet though, we are going to holiday to the IOM this summer, we haven't been there before, so quite exciting to find out more about there, but we could also find things that we didn't like too. We were all excited about going there this summer just a couple of weeks ago, but a recent family bereavement has brought us back down to Earth with a bump, and a cloud over our lives temporarily.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
I'd buy a place in Cornwall and rent for 3 months over the winter in the Algarve. Possibly rotate those three months between Thailand and Australia.0

What's wrong with a bit of excitement every now and again? The only way you might get that in Singapore is taking a durian on the train."Real knowledge is to know the extent of one's ignorance" - Confucius0 -

Did you actually live aboard the yacht for most of that 17 years or did you live ashore for long periods during that time too?Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

That's our default plan, staying mainly in the UK if we can't find a better place (just wintering in Spain or the Algarve though).Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0
