I usually use Clarity for cash, with Zero as a backup, and Select for purchases and PO as a backup.

Until recently, my foreign trips were often 3 months or longer and in that time it is possible to have cards swallowed, expired (but leaving the UK before the replacement arrives) or blocked. In the case of blocks, it's easier to use another card and get the block removed later.

Just based on my experience, 4 is a number I'm comfortable with. I should add that I don't physically carry them all the time. Usually 1 or 2, with the remainder in a hotel safe or locked in one of my "foreign abodes" or whatever.

I have rarely depended on the 4th card working, but it has happened. Last time was this:

1) First card blocked during an afternoon shopping in Taipei.
2) Ditto second card immediately afterwards
3) Went (via home) to restaurant - machine wouldn't read 3rd card. Paid on 4th card.

That evening, I got one of the blocked cards unblocked, but in the case of the second card, they said they'd have to send a replacement card to my home address in the UK. It would be another month before I got home to retrieve it.

I must be fairly lucky as Clarity has only been rejected in the UK and then only on a couple of large online purchases.
