H2testw

Is H2testw reliable?

I purchased 2 Kingston 32Gb SDHC cards from ebay, I ordered class 4 but was sent class 10, and I think these may be fake. The intention was to use them in a Mobius dash cam which has 16Gb class 4 cards in at the moment and work as they should, (class 10 won't work as I have tried before).

These 32GB show on my computer as "31.2GBN free of 31.2GB", I think this shows fakes, as genuines would show around 10% less of the total free, also the cards can be accessed from the front of the packaging by just lifting up the plastic "container" lid, something I have never come across before on Kingston, you have to cut open the packaging and lift the lid from the rear.

However I have transferred 2.6GB of data onto them but cannot play videos back via VLC player, either direct from the camera or via a USB adapter, which is the reason for the purchase. I have formatted the cards to the Mobius. This is displayed when trying to play a video: -
" VLC can't recognise the input's format:
The format of 'file:///E:/DCIM/100HDDVR/00000001.MOV' cannot be detected. Have a look at the log for details." (There is no log to look at!).

These are the test results from H2testw, suggesting there is next to no space on these cards: -

My limited use of H2TestW on USB Flash Drives has always been satisfactory.
These 32GB show on my computer as "31.2GBN free of 31.2GB", I think this shows fakes, as genuines would show around 10% less of the total free
I'm not sure what you mean by this. You may be confusing the units Gigabytes and Gibibytes. A 32 GB drive has a capacity of 29.8 GiB...

I don't think it matters, but these are SDHC cards not flash drives.

There should not be an N after the first 32GB in my OP, that was a typo.
I did say, (and you quoted me), "as genuines would show around 10% less of the total free ", and 10% off 32 leaves 28.8, not a million miles away from my "ball park" 10%.

It is definitely showing "31.2GB free of 31.2GB" on my computer, and as said I have transferred 2.6GB of data, in fact I have just transferred 4.8GB of data onto one of the cards, my computer now showing , 26.4GB free of 31.2GB, it is the video that won't play

    H2testw is showing,
    104.9 MByte OK (215008 sectors),

31.1 GByte DATA LOST (65288224 sectors),
31.1 GByte corrupted (65288224 sectors), suggesting the cards are more or less empty of free space.

ETA, it also will not display photos, but will display data, Word etc.

  • There doesn't seem to be any doubt that your cards are fake. Open a case with eBay and show eBay your evidence.

To be fair ebay have refunded me, but I just wanted to check re H2testw as it does show there is hardly any space on the cards, yet I do seem able to store data on it, but not play videos from them, and my computer suggests they are nearly 32GB.

That's the point, you can write data all day long, the partition table updates accordingly and all appears to be well, they report full capacity to the OS - but most of the data you think you stored, isn't.

But the data, Word etc, is stored and can be displayed, decreasing the volume, as I said in post #3, by 4.8GB, only photos and videos won't display/play.
