Central heating Thermostats

It sounds like the exact problem I had with my back boiler.
Is it a Baxi Bermuda ?
If you look at the bottom of the fireplace there is a flap that you fold down and it has instructions on it.
Basically you turn the thermostat knob(behind the flap) into the off position, leave it for a while and then turn it up to a high setting and the fire will try to ignite (it's an electronic ignition). Sometimes it doesn't work first time, you turn it off, wait a bit and turn it on again.
That's always worked for me.
It is a Baxi Bermuda, I will go back to the house after lunch & try that, fingers crossed:D0 -
Hi Unfortunately that didn't work, maybe I didn't wait for enough time between off & on cycles so have left it off and will try again tomorrow.0

So the pump is powering up when the CH is turned on, but the boiler does not fire?
You might want to try posting the problem here:
http://www.diynot.com/diy/forums/plumbing/
Lots of heating engineers and plumbers visit this site.
They can be a bit abrasive with unclear posts, so be as clear as you can with type of boiler, what exactly the problem is, what you've tried with what result.
But they'll give good advice.
(you can attach photos too)
Wow, they are brutal, the 1st reply I got was "Clearly you have no knowledge of heating systems and have no ability to judge if its safe, particularly when its been left unused for so long"
I fully intend to get a heating engineer involved in a few months time as we are looking to replace it for a Pellet burning Biomass system but if I got some help to get it going for a few months that was all I wanted. I won't be using Tony from DiYNot, thats for sure!
Hopefully someone else will hit the nail on the head (so to speak).
I have no intention of taking the boiler apart as I have a huge respect of things I am not qualified to do but I am happy to do some basic non dangerous tests...0 -
Lots of tw@ts on diynot as u've just found out lolI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
To be fair he does have a point. A dangerous gas appliance wouldn't need a couple months to kill you.
I would get a gas engineer to do the safety check and hopefully get the boiler up and running.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -

I totally agree about the sentiment but it was the way it was worded that shocked me. If there is an issue with a CH system that was working perfectly but has been left for some time then a simple reply suggesting that it would be sensible to have it checked out before using it would suffice & maybe even some details on why this would be wise would be appreciated.
What is the point of a forum if the stock answer is "engage a qualified engineer"? No one qualified should use the DIYNot forum as they should know what they are doing and Non Qualified people should simply go direct to a Qualified engineer, obviously!
I suggested that he doesn't apply for a role as a diplomat although he is obviously unhappy or insecure in his current job:mad:
As it stands I have reached my safe limit of testing and have asked a qualified engineer to have a look at it & I will report back so that others may benefit from my experience when a solution has been found.0 -
Update on the boiler is that it's an old system where the ch only works if the hw is also on. The hw operates separately if required but ch ONLY if the hw is also on.
I didn't know such systems still existed but apparently they do!0 -
Got one myself! It is over 20 years old, but still does the job and as they say - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.Update on the boiler is that it's an old system where the ch only works if the hw is also on. The hw operates separately if required but ch ONLY if the hw is also on.

I've had the controller unit replace in mine, the HW and CH are independent.
Only have the HW in the morning and evening, CH on all day. Seems to work fine.
So you should be able to get that fixed

Well - I did warn you!Wow, they are brutal, the 1st reply I got was "Clearly you have no knowledge of heating systems and have no ability to judge if its safe, particularly when its been left unused for so long"
........
Actually you got off lightly: i've seen worse especially when several engineers gang up......let's face it engineers have never been renowned for diplomacy!
Having said that I've used DIYNOT on quite a few occassions over the years, and received a lot of helpful/useful advice with plumbing, electrics, heating, Building Control & general DIY etc
You just need a thick skin, learn to ignore the comments that aren't helpful, & wait for the useful ones.
Bit like the property forum sometimes....... :shocked:0
