Hi All- thanks for looking at my post

The wife bought a car from a large dealership 18 days ago on finance. The car is 2 years old.

We noticed that the door seems to be a replacement and on closer inspection we can see that the paint work has overspray on several panels.
We took it to an independent garage who confirmed it has been sprayed, the door is a replacement and it looks like it has wing damage.

Took it back to the dealership today and in all fairness the young lad was very apologetic but said it would he refered to the manager. We explained we didnt want the car and although we had done A HPI check we didnt trust what damage the car had and the fact the finance has a guaranteed future value which when they see at the end of the term the car has been in a bump it would be our issue and that wasnt something we would accept

They have asked to inspect the car which they are doing on monday but just wondered if someone could advise us on our rights, quite simply we want a car, same spec BUT not this one as we dont trust it.

Edit- we have also noticed some parts under the bumper are missing and the indicator is lose along with masking tape where is has been sprayed. The car has done less that 5000miles and we havent even paid the first finance payment yet

Thanks in advance

The time to have spotted this might have been before you bought it.

It isn't unusual for cars to have panel damage repaired and it not be recorded, it is not uncommon for brand new cars to be repaired in the same way.

Though you would expect the job to be done to a reasonable standard.

First port of call is the finance company as it is their car and they will have more influence than you will over the dealer.
  • Specific to the car, as bigjl mentions, cars can have damage which doesn't write it off hence won't show on any HPI report.

Given that you seem to have purchased on PCP you are right to be concerned about the damage been picked up on any final inspection on handback.

Personally, I'd try and get the dealer to take the car back or failing that, negotiate a further discount or get a written letter from them the damage was already there when you took the car on and it was nothing to do with you.

Obviously we didnt see it at the time of collection!!

Totally understand and that we were wondering if that was best- it really is a bad effort they have made but it is only on closer inspection that you see it.

Discount wise- that isnt something that we would be looking for as we dont trust the damage that could have been done

If theres bits missing underneath, masking tape and overspray i'd be pushing for a refund or replace from the dealer.

If they arent playing ball then involve the finance company.

People do this all the time , failing to examine a car that they are buying from a dealer ! All the issues were there at the time of purchase , was it cheaper by any chance than other similar cars. Was the first owner a lease company or similar as this sounds like a patch up after it was handed back and sold to the dealer.

Sounds like the car has had a significant impact and been poorly repaired.

The dealer is obliged to tell you of anything that may influence your buying decision and he is deemed the expert.

I'd definitely be pushing for a replace or refund.

Its it from a franchised dealer? eg, is it a VW from a VW dealer? If so, i'd be on the phone to the manufacturers customer care line.

I've no particular issue with a repair to a car. That happens.

A substandard repair with bits missing underneath, overspray and masking tape left on - thats a different kettle of fish and would impact the resale value of the car.

more worryingly why wasnt all this picked up on the pre delivery to you pdi, this is a basic check of all major items on the car pre handover and is something you use to protect yourself as a dealer in case you find yourself at a small claims court, the new consumer laws mean all car traders should be doing this not just glass palaces
