Barclays removed a cheque paid in today, advice please

My wife paid in a counter cheque from Nationwide into our current account today using the automated tellers in our local Barclays. It was quite a large amount on the cheque (too us) and has since been debited from our account - I've rung the bank and the gentleman from India suggested I go into the bank on Monday and question what's gone on.

I was really just asking anyone in the know if this is a normal procedure for the bank? The cheque showed on our account (online banking uncleared) for a few hours then showed being debited off the account - I'm guessing around the time the machines where emptied for the day.

This isn't a life changing amount of money but it's a gift from a family member for us to extend the house so it's causing us no end of stress now worrying what's happened so any advice would be most appreciated many thanks.

No it's not usual, but I doubt anyone here will be able to tell you why this has happened.

I'm not sure why telephone banking can't help you though.

When machines are emptied, and checked at the end of the working day, the cheques are also checked, if there is a problem with the cheque, it will be reversed out of your account and sent back to you with a covering letter.

The reason it was reversed could be either

    1. The date on the cheque was either postdated or out of date (6months)
    2. The name on the payee line did not match the name on the account
    3. The cheque was unsigned
    4. The words and amount did not match

On reading your post you say it was a counter cheque, so the option 2 or 3 may well be one of the reasons.

Just need to wait for the letter to arrive with the cheque or visit the branch on Monday as they will have a record of the rejection of the cheque and the reason why. Telephone banking may not know this information (unless barclays put notes on the system) and will direct you to branch.

    Hope this helps.
