I know that he is still in possession of my birth certificate which he refused to return to my mother at the time of our leaving.

This means nothing. Birth, death, and marriage certificates are public documents and can be obtained by anybody if they pay the appropriate fee. I could get a copy of your birth certificate if I knew your name, date of birth and where it was registered.

Banks will not accept birth certificates as ID for anybody over 18, and for many years now birth certificates have had "not valid for identification", or similar wording, stamped on them.

Angry at the bank for what?
Insufficient security checks. A credit agency would show she has been on the ER else where since 2007.

An unfortunate set of circumstances I agree but the fault lies squarely with your father and the victim is the bank.
    .

The victim is the tax payer surely who stumped up the legal bill?

Actually yes that too, I neglected that bit.

Possibly, CRAs are a nightmare sometimes though.

  • Well we suspect that there was financial gain, because at the time he was received an £8000 solicitor’s bill however wanted to receive the services through legal aid and had to prove that he did not have the funds to pay it (which he did and does). We suspect my account was used to hide money, he also opened an account in my sisters name at the same time. But obviously were not 100% sure, and yes the account was in good standing.

To prove this play the game!
Get them to send you the statements on the account before you dispute anything.
That way you have him bang to rights and then complain to Nationwide about the account opening.
