    I've been Money Tipped!
    Unfortunately the bathroom door is right at the top of the stairs, a bit precarious for DS1 who is 2 1/2 ... and we have downlights in the bathroom, ten in all ... and four in the downstairs loo. Stairgate doesn't fit at the top of the stairs, either ...

    although you could remove 9 of the downlights, save money and the planet.

    You used to be able to buy one of these that fitted british switches, but I can't find any now, but here is the US version- http://www.dynamic-living.com/light_switch_extender.htm

    just one thing.. if you get a friend to do it make sure they screw the switch base into the beam and not simply into the celing plasterboard or lathes... otherwise repeated operation will put it down.

    I am no electrician but the way I see it is like moonrakerz said just extend the switch down the wall using external trunking and a new surface mounted box and blank off the current switch box.

    Then when they have grown you can put it all back in less than 1/2 an hour.
