Dell Latitude D630 running Win 7 Professional SP1.
Any time I try to update it gets stuck at "Checking for updates". It never completes and stays on the same screen. I thought I'd update to Windows 10 but the installation hangs at "Checking for updates" as well.
Any suggestions of how to get it to complete the checks and update?

Is it that you wish to install Windows Updates to Windows 7 or is it that you wish to move to Windows 10.
You can move to Windows 10 without installing updates to Windows 7.
Is this a new install?0 -
Windows 10 would be my preferred choice. I only thought of doing that when the Win 7 update gave me issues.
It's new to me on a recently acquired second hand laptop - not sure when it was originally installed.0 -

Usually it's because the latest Windows Update agent hasn't been installed to a new install.

But if you are just wanting to upgrade to Windows 10 Professional, you can do so be downloading the installation media and then going on to create a bootable USB installation drive with it.

Then all you need to do is.... see my PM0 -

That appeared to do the trick for Win7 and the updates downloaded and seemed to install. However, when it got to the restart bit it said update failed, reverting to original config.
I'm now downloading the Win10 from your link. I'll need to do it with a CD as I've not got a decent sized USB stick.0 -

If you still want to update Windows 7, the WU System Readiness Tool might help:

Buy one. from as little as £3 or you have to figure out how to 'mount' the image.0 -
I mounted the image and created the required file, then installed Win10 from the disk.
I haven't completed the activation bit as the System Settings page already says Windows is activated and it is showing a Product Key.
Should I leave it as is or finish the activation as described in the instructions?0 -
leave it , the win 10 server has spotted that the machine has a genuine win 7 ser number and has activated win 10Save a Rachael
