Santander Joint Account

Hi does anyone know if it would it be possible to open a joint account without having an account of your " own " .

My mother wishes to add to her existing Santander account to maximise her savings , I am willing to open a joint account with her but do not have an account with santander ,.

Would I need to open an account then open a joint account or can my mother open an Joint account and add me ?

me and my OH have opened a joint 123 account with santander without having individual ones - not a problem.

yes - it is not necessary to have a sole account as a condition of opening a joint account.

I don't think any bank would have such a condition. Many couples would want a joint account as their "main" current account.

no.

But you (and she) should be aware that it will link you two together financially and the interest will be treated as 50/50 between you (unless you make some declaration to HMRC)

There are other interest paying accounts that you mother could consider. Although Santander does have the advantage of paying interest on the largest balance.
