Hand luggage recommendations and tips

I was hoping to snap up this bargain Berghaus Hand Luggage when it dropped back down in price(its been as low as £27!), but they now don't make it anymore!

On closer inspection anyway, many airlines would refuse it's size. So maybe a blessing in disguise

Has anyone any good bag recommendations or tips on travelling light with just hand luggage.

Hoping to plan some european city breaks and want to take hand luggage only and try and travel "light"

I prefer duffel bags (eg north face) for this type of trip as they can be put in smaller spaces than rigid suitcases and they can also be worn as a rucksack. I used to have one of those wheeled cases but hated it and they always seem to shout "tourist" for some reason.
  • This Northface backpack has been my trusty travel companion for about 8 years now. It's super comfy to wear, can take a week's worth of clothes, has 3 sections for all your stuff, the middle section has compartments for pens/phones/mp3 players/paperwork/charging leads etc so all your stuff is organised and easy to find. If you end up with extra stuff the bungee section will support a carrier bag with airport snacks/extra purchases or a pair of shoes. There are 2 adjustable side pockets that hold bottles of water/sunglasses/snacks.

It complies with all airlines hand luggage requirements, can go in overhead lockers or under seats, is hard wearing and you comes in lots of colours. I take a lot of weekends away/trips home and this works well for up to a week - you can also use it during the day to carry your stuff around. Nothing worse than trying to wrestle a wheeled suitcase over cobbled streets in Europe, or being on a busy flight and having to put your bag into the hold because you didn't want to stand queueing for half an hour

  • I've just bought a couple of Cabin Max backpacks for an upcoming trip, only done a quick test pack but seems to easily hold enough clothes and things for a week if not more.

I also hate waiting for and lugging around a suitcase for short haul trips!

    My tips
-Roll your clothes, don't fold (Google ranger rolling)

-Wear your heaviest clothes on the flights

-Take as many versatile clothes as possible

-Only take things you really need, I've taken many a 'posh' outfit away with me and brought them back unworn as we didn't end up going anywhere near that Michelin starred restaurant I was eyeing up

-Grab miniature versions of toiletries from places like Home Bargains, or even buy the travel bottles and decant your own stuff, also remember they sell suncream/shaving gel/deodorant abroad too!
