I can't add much to the advice given by others about the importance of establishing the nature of the joint ownership - only to say that this does need to be confirmed before you can go any further. The presence or absence of the restriction in the register mentioned by !!!!!! is not necessarily definitive. Really it's indicative only. As has been suggested, it may well be necessary to look at the wording of the wills and at the transfer deed by which the FiL and MiL became joint owners of the property. Talking to the solicitors involved is also advisable.
