Rough idea of plastering costs?

Could anyone give us a rough idea of plastering costs please? We are complete newbies (only bought our house a yr ago) and don't want to call out a plasterer and find we are well short of the dosh needed and look like fools:rolleyes:

Living room is approx 24ft by 10ft6" - the ceiling is covered in swirly artex - not too deep, the walls are covered in very deep vertical lines - tbh I think this will have to be removed (DH says not by us), if it was skimmed it would exceed skirting and door frames!

I want it all replastered (tho can u believe DH actually really likes artex, came round tho when ds fell into wall and had 3 lovely stripes down the side of his face:eek: )

i would say about £600, i presume it's two rooms knocked through or a very long room!

sticking point maybe artex depending on if it can be boarded over and skimmed. i.e do you have coving?

this is providing you have stripped the walls etc.

another tip is when you are stripping the walls make sure you get EVERY last bit of paper off as the plasterer will have to do it for you as you need a good key for the PVA.

  • If you want to save a few £££ offer to cover everything yourself and clean up afterwards so all the pasterer has to do is come in and plaster.

    Thank you for your replies:D

Sorry didn't explain very well - the walls are artexed as well - very thick vertical grooves:(
It's definitely got to come off but DH is refusing for us to do it (I'd be willing to have a go) - says he'd rather get someone in to do the job from scratch:rolleyes:

Going by what has been said it looks like it would be at least £1000:eek: at least I've a better idea though now.

Don't forget Artex contains asbestos, so you'll need to cover up & mask up & soak it & scrape it & sand it & messy task it is too!

Then depends what the walls like underneath. But when you consider £$£$ to get someone in to paper it & cost of materials, the £500 or so a plasterer costs & then paint only after isn't bad!

    I HATE walpapering!!

  • You need to get a couple of quotes plasterers do not mind its all part of the business. Cost do vary around the country and between plasterers. Sometimes its easier and not that much dearer to plasterboard over bad artexing the plasterer if any good will advise.

  • lurker posting alert :)

in the old house before we moved, it was cheaper for us to employ a plasterer from 170miles away, go fetch him, put him up for the week than is was to employ a local.

 OMG - I didn't know that! I've got two young kids and another on the way - shows how naive I am - I was thinking I could just set to:rolleyes:

Starting to think we would have to move out whilst the work was done. Stairs, hall and landing have been covered as well, and eventually I'd like to get that done - but if it's really that bad to remove, we might wait to get it all done at once (when we've won the lottery:D )

Don't jump the gun there fella.;)

Not all Artex contains Asbestos. Asbestos was banned from all building materials from 1999, although Artex may have ceased earlier - you could call them direct for an answer.

What you could do is take a sample to your environmental health department (double bagged) - but call them 1st - and they can have it analysed for you.

If it does indeed contains the big A, it's probably likely to be white Asbestos, which is very low risk.

You will get all the required advice from the pros before you chip in there with a scraper.
