I can see someone else's information on my credit file

Options
A few weeks back I posted on the Mortgages & Endowments board about that fact that a mystery mortgage had been applied to my online banking account - see forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5391835 (as a new user, I'm not allowed to post direct links, sorry).

I was advised to check my credit report and I was relieved to see that the details of this mortgage did not appear on the file, so assumed it was a computer error specific to my bank.

However, I've since checked my report again and lo and behold, the mortgage is now showing, along with all of the mortgage holder's financial accounts. This includes his name (the same as mine), address, credit card, current accounts, mortgage, water, power and telecoms accounts, the whole shebang.

Obviously, this quite alarming, as it's left me wondering if this person can also see my information on their credit report and, of course, this person's financial habits and history are now having a huge effect on my credit score. The implications are pretty scary.

I've put in a help request with Clearscore, through whom I obtained the report, but is there anything else I should be doing or anyone else I should be speaking to / shouting at to try to get this situation resolved? I'm really not sure where to turn. Thanks in advance.

  • No need to be shouting, now you've raised a dispute.

But check the other CRAs to be sure the mistake isn't replicated there.

Firstly I would get a new £2 report direct from Equifax.

    See: http://www.equifax.co.uk/Products/credit/statutory-report.html

(Plus maybe Experian and Callcredit as well.)

That will allow you to double check that the same info shows when you access your report directly, rather than with a 3rd party service like clearscore. Given what you said about the mortgage showing with the bank, I suspect it will, but it is worth the check.

It will also allow you enter a dispute if needed direct with Equifax.

However, if a link or mix up with your bank then ultimately I think it will require a complaint to them, on incorrect information and data protection. Mention that is not sorted out PDQ, then you will be taking them to the FOS and reporting to the ICO.
