A diesel car will cost you approx £1500 more than the equivalent petrol engined model.
You should also look at the cost of a litre of diesel against the cost of a litre of unleaded........
In my area diesel can be up to 5p per litre more than petrol......you do the maths !!!!!
I have run diesel cars for maybe 15 years now ever since diesel was about 10p a litre cheaper than petrol.
Then the government stepped in.......I an now seriously looking at going back to a petrol engine

Diesel in my town is the same as petrol at the moment - both 95.9 pence at tesco.

I fail to see how the cost per a liter comes into it even with 5 p differance its still more economical, on 55 liters in my 2.0 dti astra i get 450 - 600 miles per a tank show me a 2.0 petrol that does that ??

yes so that liter may be 5 p more but probably goes 50% further than a liter of petrol.

Id definately goes disisel first off resale is higher, secondly you only need a "full service" every 20 / 30 000 miles with maybe oil changes at 10 000 if your a heavey town driver. Diesels tend to having timing chains not belts and these dont need changing till over 100 000 miles and in some case`s are never changed unless they show excessive wear. the differance in servicing costs is negligable (my local vauxhall garage charges same price for a service regardless of petrol / diesel).
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

Crikey that's expensive - we only pay 91.9 for both at our Tesco in Bangor, Northern Ireland!

It's 91.9 in and close to major cities, but more out of the way it's usually about 4p or so more.

remember when diesel was half the price of petrol and the derv pump was round the side of the petrol station?
that was before it got popular and the government decided it was a new revenue source ;)

Same hear and not just at Tesco a few places, but not all, locally selling at the same price.

Since changing to diesel I have more than halved my monthly fuel bills for my car. the old one was a bit of a guzzler mind you.

They have actually made it so you can legally use veg oil without paying taxes up to a certain mileage, so one decision has gone the consumer's way. Not all diesels like it though, but not bad at 50p/litre if you find a car that can run it.

Well im 20 miles from central London - probably paying the london premium again! :(
  • Diesel ever time for me. Better tickover when in a queue. just roll on idle. Better econ when cold. Not so much gear changing.

We pay £30 tax a year and get 65-70 to the gal. Service the same as a petrol.

Petrol every time and preferably VPower or Optimax, Occasionally get diesel
hire cars, and they are awful especially if I get a non Turbo, sooooo slow.
Of all the diesel cars I have driven, the only one that I could have lived with cost 35K !!!
They are like driving tractors, horribly noisy on tickover and starting, a few extra mpg would never get me to swap.
