Recommend me a car, with kids learning to drive soon

Hi all, I want to about spend £5k getting a medium sized, safe, reliable, car which is affordable to insure with young drivers named.

Basic problem: I need a new car because my old one is a crock. I have run it years past its sell by date because I'm really tight (that's why I'm posting here). The dash lights up like Blackpool illuminations with all the warning lights, and bits fall off. I drive about 6000 miles per year, mainly on country roads.

Secondary problem: I have 16 year old twins & they are going to want to learn to drive soon. I'm not planning on buying another car, they can learn in mine & then use it when I'm not. Their safety is my priority.

Any tips? Thanks

Depends what you call medium-sized - - personally, I don't think you would go far wrong with a 2014 5-door Corsa to meet your needs.
Old dog but always delighted to learn new tricks!
  • I would recommend a honda jazz or toyota yaris mainly due to reliabilty

Whatever you plan to get; run some dummy insurance quotes through first for a 17 yr-old; don't rely on the old insurance grouping as the insurance companies are making up their own rules now based on each make and model.
Why spend so much if your children will be driving it? They are bound to have scrapes. Get on old focus; cheap to fix.

Insurance is going to be the deal breaker, check prices for adding them as provisional licence holders, then the price as newly passed full licence holders prepare for the latter to be much more than the former. I am a fan of learners doing lots of practice with friends and family while learning. I had 4 lessons then drove about 6000 miles in 6 months then had 2 lessons before the test, I had no experience of the test route, but the examiner said it was one of the best drives she had been on in a long time.

Back in the day, I had 13 lessons and then the test; passed after probably driving less than 100 miles. My first insurance at 17 cost £60 and it was on a big car (Austin Cambridge)!

I had 12 lessons and the test for £14 in 1961. It seemed an awful lot at the time.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

As has been said do some dummy insurance quotes, BUT put your kids down as named drivers presuming they'd passed their driving tests (obviously add a year or so on to their ages), it seems being a provisional driver named on insurance is lower then being a newly qualified driver. (to be fair driving like I did with my dad in the car compared to what I drove like without him in the car it makes perfect sense). Chatting to neighbours with younger kids insurance quotes can seem strange, ie a 1.0l KA costs more to insure then a 1.3l KA, a car that seems less 'cool' for kids will probably have a lower insurance premium.

Ha ha yeah my dad was always driving uncool cars while I was trying to get him to buy a Zodiac with a dual band radio (no NOT FM, Medium wave and Long wave)
