Someone wants to be on our insurance...

Just curious before I reply to someone.....

Basically, a friend of mine (not a close friend- someone I occasionally say hello to online and haven't seen for over a year as she moved away- and who hubby barely knows) sent me a message today saying she's got a car at last but can't afford to insure it till next week- and could my hubby add her to his insurance till then.

Without going into details, I wouldn't be happy about this for lots of reasons- plus I know what hubby's response will be when he gets in and I tell him! I've no intention of saying yes.

BUT- before I reply, I thought I'd ask a question here (as I don't drive and know stuff all about car insurance). Surely that wouldn't be allowed, would it?

I mean- I can't see how we could add her to our insurance when she wouldn't be driving our car- but her own....and hubby wouldn't be driving hers.

Is that even possible????

  • What a strange thing to ask! The only thing I can think of is that a lot of insurance covers you to drive other cars. But the cover is just there for occasional infrequent use, not for driving another car for a week and never driving yours. I imagine a swift no will sort it out either way.

  • It is a bit of a weird thing to ask, isn't it?

I thought that adding someone as an additional driver (even temporarily) meant that they'd be insured to drive our car- not a car not even owned by us, by someone in a completely different town.

It's definitely going to be a 'no'- but it made me wonder if I'd gone loopy and not understood how it works!

Friends car still has to be separately insured

We tried to use our insurance to cover a different car just so my husband could deliver a car we bought for my mother in law to her in Norfolk. The insurance company said it would only cover him for one journey and he hadn't to stop on the way! If you relate this experience as a reason not to do it, you avoid embarrassment, I think. Just say she would not be insured to drive her car.

  • I've answered her by saying 'Sorry, no'- but it did make me wonder if she meant putting a second car on our insurance (No way!) but I'm pretty darn sure that can't be legal- pretending he's driving a car that he'll never even see. I'm sure that's a term for that.

I get the feeling it'll be a long time before we hear from her again!

Some people especially just passed test ones, can put a more experienced driver on their policy as a named driver. To save money.

Son/daughter with car can put both parents on as named drivers.

Insurance companies look at it as it cuts risk one third inexperienced, two thirds of time driven by experienced drivers

Named drivers cannot drive other cars unless they have insured them theirselves.

Hi I have worked in the insurance industry for a number of years and have just left due to childcare reasons. If someone wants to be on your motor policy as a named driver they cannot rely on the 3rd party aspect of a fully comprehensive policy to be insured for their own car because each car needs it's own insurance individual policy, if that person gets pulled by police and says they are on your policy and are driving their car 3rd party and do not have a policy for their car at all then it is not roadworthy and illegal to not have insurance and a conviction could take place. A temporary additional vehicle could not be added to your insurance unless you have insurable interest meaning some sort of financial interest in your friends car for example did you buy your friends car are you on their log book? If your friend wants to be named on your car then does your friend have insurable interest in your car do they regularly use your car? What is the benefit to you on this? Also if someone is trying to cut a corner and has no interest in your vehicle and just wants to be named on your policy it could be classed as 'fronting' which could be deemed as illegal. Your friend needs their own policy for own car. Hope this helps
