Redundancy options on restructuring

Options
My OH's team at work is being restructured. He has been told that his existing job will no longer exist, and his boss wants him to take on a different role with more responsibility (broader range of projects and roughly three times as many direct reports). It's not clear yet whether he would be required to apply for the new job or not. Redundancy options haven't been discussed, but in this situation does he have the right to ask for redundancy if he isn't interested in the alternative job?

If he can justify why it is not a suitable alternative.

Some places trip people into applying so if you turn the job down you resign.

Ask questions like is this the only potentially suitable alternative on offer let me think about trial periods and training requirements.
  • In a restructuring situation most companies will allow you to have a trial period in a new role. If it becomes a redundancy situation then suitable alternative employment has to have the same level of responsibility , I.e it's not necessarily suitable if there are substantial differences in responsibility levels, management responsibilities etc

The new position has a more senior job title and a lot more management responsibility, with some difficult inter-personal dynamics thrown in. Same salary grade as existing job, but essentially a management job rather than a 'doing' job, and he likes the doing. The trial idea sounds good, how would that work?
