Cashing Personal Cheques

Hi All
I'm in a sticky position where I have foolishly overspent this month and am left with £0.62p in my account until payday on Monday.
However, I need to do food shopping this weekend, so my question is are there any places that will cash a personal cheque from myself? I know some places cash 3rd party A/C payee cheques, but was wondering if I could go to a place with 'blank' cheque, would I be able to get it cashed?
If that makes sense....
I'm aware that there may be commission to pay..
Thanks
Kevin

Do you have a credit card you can spend on or an agreed overdraft (or can apply for one if not) with your bank?
You will probably find those cheaper than using a cheque cashing facility..0 -
Hi gt94sss2
Thanks for your message.
Unfortunately, I do not have a credit card and my OD is used.
I'm aware of the commission that I'd have to pay, but as I'm getting a refund next week I'm 'happy' to pay for a charge if it means getting an early release of cash for this weekend (if that makes sense?)

schmoo27,
Thanks for the reply.
Cheque cashing places do exist but what is available locally will depend on where you are based.
Examples would be:
Cash Convertors
The MoneyShop
Cash Generator
Cheque Centre
(Google will no doubt be able to suggest others - I have never used one)
Re: your existing bank account -before you give up on this as an option:
1. Is there any possibility of asking them for a (temp?) overdraft increase;
2. Some banks process their Monday transactions over the weekend so its possible your pay may appear in your account before then (and can then also be withdrawn 'early'). Do you mind me asking which bank it is?
Apologies if I am being presumptuous but you may also find it helpful to visit some of the other MSE boards for advice on budgeting (such as the Debt-Free Wannabe board) though it won't help your immediate situation.0 -
Thanks again.
The nearest Cash Converters have said they do not cash personal cheques, so that isn't an option. Money Shop is the only other local one so I shall try them.
In answer to the questions, my bank (Co-Op) were unsympathetic to my request to temporarily increase the OD from now til Monday. And normally, if payday falls on a Monday (it is always the last working day), then it will be the Monday.
Thanks again.0 -

When you get sorted out, close your account with Co-op (after having first opened another one) and tell them why you're doing so.0 -
Rather than search for a cheque cashing facility why not simply use a payday lender - in this case the loan will literally only be needed until the next payday so the cost shouldn't be high, and might well be less than commission on getting a cheque cashed (I also believe that it's an offence to write a cheque knowing that the funds are not available to cover it - not that that is likely to be an issue in this case).0

Yes, could be an option. The downside is credit checking.0 -
Haven't you taken your meds today.?!
The bank staff will not care, in the slightest, why the OP is closing his / her account. When you get sorted out, close your account with Co-op (after having first opened another one) and tell them why you're doing so.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Kevin - so it's "he", should write to the CEO closing his account. Only by people taking such a stance will these bounders up their game when it comes to customer service.0 -
