Lynz I alaways carry a pre-mac travel well. These are recomended ( and used) by Ray Mears. www.pre-mac.com
The effectiveness of Pocket Travel Well has been proven in tests carried out by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In these tests total elimination of the bacteria Escherichia coli at 108.4 per litre was recorded whilst reductions of Poliovirus in excess of 99.9%, with a holding time of 2 minutes, were recorded. This effectiveness is maintained throughout the stated treatment capacity of 50 litres.

Crypto is actually a protozoan parasite and will not be killed off by adding purification tablets - so I'm afraid your info is incorrect. It is very resistant to chemical water treatments.

You need to boil the water - full stop.
You had better tell the British Army quick.
We used filtration and chlorine for regular larger supplies of water and purification tablets for personal use while out working or on patrol. We boiled water for evening meals but didn't for daytime drinking due to patrol restrictions..
Bilaharzia is the water bourne snail then,I must have mixed them up the little !!!!!!s! thanks for pointing it out at least lnyzpower will be safe.
All we ever had problems with were the leeches and malaria being totally wet and sunburnt all the time.
I would use a purification pump with extra filters and boil the rest as already mentioned.

I'm basing my advice on the thesis I carried out at Uni that was specifically related to the best methods used to free waters of Crypto.

Filters and chemical treatments have limited effectiveness, even when used properly, as the oocysts are very resilient and incredibly small, and can therefore pass through filters. Filters are also prone to failure if improperly maintained. They also have a very tough outer layer that is resistant to a host of treatments.

That is why I recommended boiling of water, as it's cheap and very effective, specifically against Crypto.

I could post a host of data to backup my claims, but that is not for a forum like this.

No need to worry, just boil your water mate!

Malawi is well known for it's problems with sanitation and issues with Crypto in their water supply. The University of Strathclyde (where I studied) have been undertaking studies and projects for well over a decade with the people of Malawi in relation to these problems.

Lynz, you are right to worry but keep it in perspective.

I've travelled to over 80 countries and am often 'off the beaten track' in the middle of nowhere! I've not travelled in Malawi, so you've one over me :T and I like forward to hearing about your trip.

Regarding water, if you take it to it's finality, the only way you can guarantee completetly safe water, is to boil it for at least ten minutes. But what about the vessel you're going to drink it out of should that should also be sanatised? Yes there's a slght risk, but that's all it is, you're on bloody holiday, do you want to spend the whole day boiling four litres of water per person, because that's the amount you could need!

Basically you'll want clean water and I imagine you'll be carring plenty of that with you? I always keeep my Travel well with me in case I end up in circumstaces I've either run out of clean water or can't get any! In all my travelling I've never had health problems. Take the right precautions and enjoy your Holiday, that's what it's all about.

Best avoided again. Crypto Oocysts are 5 micrometres in diameter, typically,

So significantly bigger than the 0.3mic filter in that Katadyn Filter then
