Internet issues

Options
For some time I have been having issues with occasional dropped connections. Zen technical support put it down to electrical noise.

Something made me wonder if the elderly Linksys WAG354G router might be dodgy, so I bought a Netgear D1500 to try.

Before I fitted the new router my internet connection died completely. Swapping in the new router got the connection back, but it was slow and unstable. Zen reset the line and it seemed OK after that, except for my work VPN connection (openvpn), which was barely usable.

Swapping back the original router at this point, it seems OK, but I don't have confidence in it. OTOH openvpn works fine with it.

Getting a 3rd router is the obvious solution, but as we couldn't figure out why openvpn wouldn't work with the Netgear, we risk hitting the same issue.

Google can't find any known issues with the D1500 and openvpn. Any pointers would be welcome.

    Hi

You say the Linksys is elderly, then I would suggest you check out if a firmware upgrade has been done or can be done. You have little to lose and quite a lot to gain.

I suggest you talk to openvpn forums for Netgear config problems.

Re. internet connection, if zen cannot sort you out, nobody can. I'd normally suggest somebody takes the ISP recommended router but you seem to know what you're doing. Some people on here may be able to comment on your router stats if you post them.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

There are no firmware upgrades available that I can see and I doubt whether it is a good idea to try to extend it's life. I have bought another up to date router from Asus and I will see if that does any better.

    I don't expect much TBH.

I wasn't really sure the router was the problem and I didn't really have a coherent question, which makes it hard to pick a cogent title.
