I am well aware that I have to pay council tax, and there's no way of avoiding it with land registry etc They will get me on that. But if I lose my current job and go on tax credits I won't have to pay council tax (don't have to by law) until my salary increases if what I read is true. Isn't that the case?
Not wanting to go on electoral register is so if anyone I didn't want to find me searches for me they won't find me. I don't want any Tom !!!! or Harry looking me up on the internet!
You seem to be a tad confused about benefits.
If you lose your job then you could claim JSA, either contribution based if you have paid the correct amount of NI contributions or income based JSA if you have savings under £16000.
Tax credits are paid if you meet the criteria. To claim working tax credits you need to be working and to claim child tax credits you need to have children. Both have income limits.
If you tell us your circumstances we may be able to help.0 -
Not as simple as that:applepicker wrote: »..... But if I lose my current job and go on tax credits I won't have to pay council tax (don't have to by law) until my salary increases if what I read is true. Isn't that the case?.....
And surely all decent patriotic persons wish to contribute ....
The Government has change council tax relief somewhat...(no more "Council Tax Benefit") . In the past if one's income was low enough or on the relevant "passported" benefits and had filled the correct forms in you end up paying zero council tax (the rest of us tax-payers paying for the services you still use: You're welcome!).
However, since the change to "Council Tax Reduction" the occupant(s) usually have to pay 10% (shame eh?) - although it depends on what your local council does,... see

&
https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/help-if-on-a-low-income/help-with-your-council-tax-council-tax-reduction/council-tax-reduction-what-you-need-to-know/
& for Manchester (an example)
http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/500181/council_tax_support/5953/what_is_council_tax_supportIn general the lower your income the more your bill can be reduced by Council Tax Support. But Council Tax Support will not cover all your bill. Everyone of working age has to pay at least 15 per cent of the bill from April 2014
Cheers!
Artful (In receipt of 6 benefits, thank you you kind taxpayers..)0
