Any ideas for decorating a house with deep blue carpet?

Hi all,

I am moving to a new rental flat in a couple of weeks where the bedroom and living room are decorated with deep blue carpet.

In my current flat, carpet is neutral with red themed decor which won't exactly complement the blue, so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts to on how to decorate the bedroom/living room without spending too much? I would love some idea on colour schemes as I have no idea what would look good with blue! Walls are all painted an off white colour.

I have a beige IKEA sofa and oak wood furniture at the moment which will probably have to stay as I can't afford to buy everything new but I could change soft furnishings. Will need new curtains as my current ones are red and beige.

I really love the idea of cosy, comfy spaces and am worried the blue will make the rooms look very dark and very cold - they are small anyway so I don't want to make them look tiny!

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Age/quality of carpet?

Ask landlord if you can replace it at your cost. Get written consent.
  • Unsure of the age but current tenant has been there for 4 years and the carpet was definitely in place before she moved in.

If I could afford to replace it I 100% would, but just paying the deposit and one month's rent in advance is stretching me on moving in! So I think the blue is here to stay for a while!

    Nice Rugs?
  • You could ask the landlord if they would like to contribute for new carpets.
I would doubt it at this stage(although mention betterment)
You have seen the flat and presumably agreed a rental figure.
However every landlord wants good long term tenants. If you don't ask you don't get.
Rugs, throws and maybe a lick of paint is an option.

You could ask the landlord, but i think it would be better to leave it for a few months of you paying rent before asking imo
A thankyou is payment enough .

I'd consider some large pale coloured rugs, which would help to counter the dark colour of the carpet.

Deep reds can go with blue, depending on the shades. Blue can also go well with cream / gold / yellow shades, or with greens or greys.

Creams and golds will work well with the blue. Silvers and greys may also work well.

I would get big rugs and then paint the walls a similar colour.
  • I would go with a light grey/off-white (but nothing with yellow hints like magnolia) and accessorise with artwork.

    Tone it down with neutrals
Avoid adding strong colours like yellow
  • Thank you for the advice everyone - I was considering yellow so thank you for putting me right on that one.

I am thinking silver and greys at the moment to try and balance it out. Big rugs are a great idea - could go for a white in the bedroom under the bed? It is quite a small flat so need to be clever about furniture positioning.

We have already agreed a discounted rental figure and I am going through credit checks at the moment so I don't think I could approach the carpet issue until I am there a bit longer as has been suggested. I am not sure if it is appropriate to ask for it to be painted before I move in, or if this is something I suggest to do?
