Prices vary over the country.
In the E Midlands, I'm currently paying 11.152ppu in the daytime and 6.203ppu at night. I'm not too sure what the most competitive non-E7 tariff charges but very much doubt it will be "only a bit" more than 6.203. I suspect my standing charge per day will be more than a non-E7 customer but really not sure how much.
But of course anybody can use a tariff comparison site and get the actual figures that would apply to them from different suppliers with or without E7. Indeed, you can even pretend to live somewhere else and see what you'd get then
I did just that and it seems that the best E7 tariff for me would be 45% cheaper at night and 10% more in the day.
But that is when it all just starts to get very complicated with deemed export, EV charging strategies, possibility of switching consumption to the E7 period etc etc.
Then there is the question of how one switches to E7, whether it costs to do so and whether any switch to a new meter would result in a smart meter being fitted with no more deemed export.....
I'm not sure I am smart enough to model it tbh, too many variables

We've been on E7 since we built the house. Before solar panels we always ran dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, greenhouse heaters and any other large consumers on night rate but perhaps still didn't quite make a profit on the deal. Since SPs, major items are run on PV in the summer but E7 in the winter,I did just that and it seems that the best E7 tariff for me would be 45% cheaper at night and 10% more in the day. That looks as though E7 Night rate is exactly half the E7 Day rate which used to be true for everyone in the 1960s but now varies quite a lot.
But that is when it all just starts to get very complicated with deemed export, EV charging strategies, possibility of switching consumption to the E7 period etc etc.
Then there is the question of how one switches to E7, whether it costs to do so and whether any switch to a new meter would result in a smart meter being fitted with no more deemed export.....

I don't really anticipate relying only on PV during the summer - more than likely to want to use it when charging is most economical - but will no doubt make a concerted effort to have early lunch + long siesta whilst charging at a lowish rate around Noon

Ours is used for school runs and dropping me at station and is home with DW at lunchtimes so charges at 2.4kw until full at 3pm (panels are 74 West) so we use a lot of PV that would otherwise be exported, about 7kw per day on average.I think....0 -
Eric & michaels - do you have a choice of charge rates? In so much as you can limit charge rate to some degree, depending on generation, say 1kW, 2kW etc.
Mart.Mart. Cardiff. 8.72 kWp PV systems (2.12 SSW 4.6 ESE & 2.0 WNW). 28kWh battery storage. Two A2A units for cleaner heating. Two BEV's for cleaner driving.

Quite a wide range actually - but only in steps. 5A , 10A, 13A or 16A - although the obvious downside is time. Battery would fully charge from empty in 5hrs at the 16A rate but needs about 14 hrs at the 5A rate. Immersun claim to be working on some sort of device to supply all the spare power to an EV but it's really the EV that is supposed to be setting the charge rate and I'm really not convinced that anything from the supply side is likely to be effective.
And of course another snag is the speed at which Immersun work ! So I'm thinking that economy 7 would make sense for us in the winter but not for the rest of the year.
What are the odds of being able to get a non-smart economy 7 meter fitted and then switch between E7 and non-E7 tariffs on a seasonal basis....I think....0 -

When we had our replacement meter fitted last year we were told that there were no 'smart' economy 7 meters. Not sure how true this is, but that's what the meter installer said.

You'd think really that a truly 'smart' meter ought to be able to send back hourly readings that supplier could use to work out which ones were peak and which off-peak. Strictly, they could have been right in that there are probably no smart-meters which can switch-on a high-load circuit themselves (storage heating etc) and then measure all cheap-rate usage on a separate register in exactly the same way that (dumb) meters have done for decades ..... however, why would any manufacturer really want to limit their system's capabilities so much when a smart-meter releases the ability to perform HHM (HalfHourlyMetering) and the associated HHB (Billing) which would achieve the same either with existing timers or a simple smart-relay ? ..... this just really shows what use this really expensive (~£12billion) smart-meter project actually is without parallel development of the relevant gadgets and control systems from the 'internet of things' ... ie, Domestic BEMS ...
