Using Annie Sloan paint

I've taken the plunge and bought some AS paint to paint a fire surround in our new house. It's currently a light coloured highly varnished wood and I'm planning on painting it graphite grey and then waxing with clear wax.
I'm not artistic at all so I'm a bit nervous about ruining the surround, just wondered if anyone had any hints or tips? I'm not a fan of the distressed look so will be just painting a solid colour.

Hi, Although A.S paint is meant to adhere to all manner of surfaces, I bought some stuff called Owatrol ESP - easy surface prep.
It's sole purpose is to leave a micro thin layer on top of any surface, which should give any paint something solid to stick to.
I must admit, I have only done a test patch so far but result seem to look good so far!0 -
ESP is brilliant stuff - I've used it a number of times.0

Remember to add a bit of water to AS paint. It is very very thick!0

on the subject of Annie Sloan paint - how do you eliminate the telltale signs of brush strokes on a smooth flat surface?
Has anyone else sanded each layer first, before then sealing??0 -
We have used chalk paint on various items. We always sand first then paint. We use wax afterwards to seal.0
