When I had a similar op I had a canula in my hand and they injected the block high in my arm.
But why do they put the canula in my hand if they don't think if the block doesn't work they will give a general?
On that occasion it didn't say general on my record.

They'll put a canula just in case you need a drip.

They will prefer to not give a general for minor op - if only for a cost perspective - these days it's all considered. Takes longer to recover from a general & needs monitoring for longer.

You will get time to talk & I would still try & arrive in plenty of time - don't leave just in time - arrive early.

All the best - you will be fine. It's understandable to worry. The staff are really well trained and do do a check list with you as you are prepped & the procedure explained. You will be given plenty of time to ask any questions.

Thank you for all your help - I am still very worried though a little less following your comments.
Earlier today I had considered just not turning up although I then thought that would be very rude but possibly not more than them putting general on my record in the first place, giving me all this worry.

No, a saline drip. You know, those bags of fluid on a stand.

  • aardvaaak you're just winding yourself up now.
You WILL have a cannula whether you have a local or general because that's what's needed.
Just stop worrying, ask the questions you want to and be reassured by the people who are trying to help you.

Thank you I am now reassured by that - why would I need a saline drip?

Do please turn up for your op.

OH was two years in severe pain awaiting a total hip replacement. waiting lists are long.

I was amazed to discover that many people just don't turn up for their op without contacting the hospital beforehand so that someone else could have the chance of that place on the waiting list. It's an expensive time for a hospital - everything is geared to you turning up & it would be a shame not to - you will need to have the op done & it is best to get it done as soon as poss - get it out of the way.

It is understandable to be nervy - that's natural, but please do go.

The shunt in the back of the hand is done as routine & is in case of anything going awry - high blood pressure etc. It is so that they don't have to faff about getting a shunt in a vein as there is already one there just on the off chance that they may need to get medicine etc into the blood stream quickedy snip - they are quite good at these things & have it all down to a fine art.

I will turn up for the appointment and talk to the Anesthetist and Consultant and hope.
As I said earlier I am now more reassured
