are there any apples that cant be eaten

we have an apple tree growing behind our house on the edge of the woods, its the only one. it has green/red apples on it and my 5yo has been determined to pick some lol, but now i want to check before i let him eat them that there are no apple varieties that cannot be eaten, i dont want him to get a bad tummy lol.
Or if there are any that need to be cooked first etc, i dont want to waste them, i'm all for using the food that grows natuarally we noticed them while we were blackberry picking.

There aren't any poisonous ones, if that what you mean, but there are varieties that will be very sour. These are used in cider making and rarely planted individually. There are also varieties usually used only for cooking and they are also on the sour side but not so bad.

Different varieties of apples ripen at different times during late summer and autumn. An apple is ready to pick when it comes away from the branch easily and if you shake it, you should be able to hear the seeds rattling inside. Have a taste and see what you think!

The good thing about the under-ripe or sour ones is that children tend to spit them out anyway - so the tummy ache is avoided by natural selection!

sounds like it could be a crab apple tree..........makes a great crab apple jelly for using with all sorts of meats hot or cold

I'm sure they'll be fine - cup apple in hand and gently turn through 90 degrees, if it comes away its ripe!
