It is down to the email package you have. The OPs sound like basic email that you get with a domain, not an email hosting package

The OP does say "a domain and hosting", but you may be right.

That would be an additional $9.95 per month. Probably more than Fasthosts want to allow use of their SMTP server

They also advertise PAYG and free tiers down at the bottom

Another idea would be to host the email with a dedicated email provider. If your on a tight budget, Polarismail for example do a $12/about £8 year basic email hosting service. MXRoute do something similiar for $10/about £7. Pobox do a package where they provide SMTP when you host your domains with them $15 a year. Microsoft and Google will also host your email for you, but far more expensive starting at around £35.

I think the easiest/cheapest thing to do would be to switch to an ISP that provides an SMTP server you can use.

To be honest, if the OP is going to go to the effort of a 3rd party SMTP provider I'd suggest they'd be better off paying a little extra and going the whole hog by getting either Google apps for business or Office 365.

At least it then means emails are sent/received onto an enterprise grade professional platform, backed up, virus checked (usually) and completely independent of the hosting company.

Not sure why, but the thought of "3rd party" SMTP server and "3rd parties" in general handing emails is somewhat off putting to me, I know Google and Microsoft are technically 3rd parties, but they're big businesses with a good rep, lord only knows what some of these small 3rd party SMTP providers get up to.
