HSBC replacement debit card - Old still active?

I took my debit card to HSBC last week as the magnetic strip had started to peel away making it rather hit and miss at cash withdrawals!
Anyway a new one came in the post and activated, I even used it to make a small online purchase on Sunday.
But...my old one still appears to be active! I've not taken my new one out of the house yet but yesterday manages to purchase a McDonalds using Apple Pay contactless and then just now top up my phone using my old card details (saved on record).
So what is going on? Is it because I handed them in the card rather than reporting it lost / stolen? In the past I've always assumed once the new card becomes activated the old one will stop working

Got a letter from Santander the other day saying as I hadn't used my debit card lately they won't be sending a new one when it expires. The number they quoted didn't ring any bells & my debit card isn't due to run out for years. It turns out they were referring to an old card that had been superseded years ago.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

Your old card can remain active for up to 30 days' after receiving your replacement.
That's probably why it's still working for Apple Pay/top ups. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0
