HSBC - Safeguard update information

Hi

I have received a letter from HSBC asking me to update my details in order for my protection 'safeguard' they call it. I went and checked my details online and all is correct.

I rang them as I did not want to fill the form out and post back. They wanted to know my residence status, gross annual income, my tax status, employer name, hours I work etc.

I have never had to do this before for any other account and no one I know has had to either.

Is this the norm?

Probably so that they can target you for specific sales pushes. ie account upgrades, mortgages, insurance products etc
  • Sounds like a lot of it is related to tax. You've got an obligation to make sure your details are up to date and the bank can ask you to do that. Also, if you forget your password/security details when you talk to them over the phone/in branch they can use that information to help identify you.

Tell the nosey gits nothing. None of that information is any of their business. It's best to ignore such requests. They obviously want it for customer profiling.

Just seen this contemptuous offering from HSBC:

    http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/contact-and-support/security-centre/hsbcsafeguard#

The FAQ links don't work, but I guess each one would just lead you to another load of blustering waffle.

Try the video if you want a laugh. The voice of that woman is enough to give you the creeps.

These scumbags really are intent on making life difficult for their customers.

They will inevitably lose customers because of this. They are trying to collect pure marketing information on the back of so-called "safeguarding", whatever the hell that might mean. Bloody sewer dwellers!

Hi GingerBob, whilst you're chilling out, how about dreaming up a more suitable acronym for the four letters "HSBC" ?
i.e. Have Shredded Blank Cheques..... maybe a prize for the best one :)
    16 x Enhance 250w panels + SolarEdge Inverter + TREES :(
