    There are too many variables.

Best to attend a couple of auctions selling these vans and see what they are selling for.

That is the only reliable way to gauge prices.
  • i wanted one it's a pretty good colour - much better than white. they appear on gumtree a lot and also on bca site. But there's no point you going to bca as a private buyer they will slap on a huge markup for private buyer.

Please explain how they can "slap on a huge mark up" at an Auction.

    Buyers fees are clearly displayed.

And any ex British Gas van that is on gumtree has got there via Auction at some point as British Gas don't sell on Gumtree.

You will always pay less at Auction.

Unless you are an idiot that doesn't know the value of what you are bidding on.

a private buyer can pay up to 10% in fees at bca.

Trader will not pay these fees and buy from bca and list them on gumtree with a 10% margin for themselves.

Who is the idiot here, the one who blindly bids at bca and unable to test drive or inspect the car and who has to travel to a faraway auction site. Or one that buys from a trader on gumtree who is local to him and has the ability to testdrive, view more pics and look at the service history etc.
  • I cant get the latest price but lets take This July buyers price fees as a guide: https://www.british-car-auctions.co.uk/Global/UK/Buyers%20Fees/BCA_Standard_Buyers_%20Fees_Standard_July_2015.pdf

A typical 2008-09 ex british gas caddy is anywhere ranging from £4000 to £6000. Lets take £4000 as a guide. For a caddy that closes at £4000. The private buyer will have to pay £441 in fees.

Ask any trader what they'll sell a vehicle they purchase for £4000 for. They'll probably list it at £4600 and accept somewhere in the £4400 figure.
  • No would probably go to BCA at Blackbush but living in Canada at the moment and just planing for purchase on return.
Can see from Auto Trader etc that dealers have a large number of these already so wanted to get a gauge on if it was even worth buying direct from auction if there are not sufficient savings no problem buying from a dealer.
Fees seem to be a about 450 if the van was in the region 3,500 UK pounds.
I was a car dealer in N.America so am used to buying cars at auctions.
Gas Service Engineer by trade that is why B.Gas vans are of more interest to me as most are fully racked out, full service history and low ish miles.BT vans may well be of interest.
When I first started out self employed 15 years ago purchased a ex B.gas Vauxhall combo from Blackbush worked out well for me although cant remember the fees being anything close to what they are now.
  • Dealer margins a pretty tight if that's all they are making, so may be better to buy from them especially in the quanta ties about.
Thanks for the info London tiger

On the low end of the market yes, the price is driven down by private sellers. But slightly higher end the dealers would make up some of the money in finance agreement, some people will be £6000 car on finance.

A dealer will barely make his time back at that. More likely is it'll be listed around £5500 and he'll take £5000.

No proper dealer can afford to source, transport, stock, prep and warrant a vehicle for £400 unless he's shifting 10's a day.

    Let's answer the question.

Where do all these ex British Gas vans come from if not auction??

So your entire point is moot.

British Gas disposes of their fleet at Auction.

Which other way do these vehicle get into private hands?

You are just doing what you have in other threads, posting nonsense.

All buyers fees have increased at BCA, Manheim and Aston Barclay over recent years.

This is not the doing of the Auction house but rather a result of the larger fleets trying to increase the returns from their fleets come disposal time.

The big fleets put more and more of the burden on the Auction meaning they are making less and less profit to secure these large fleet disposal contracts. Hence fees go up to the buyer, trade and private.

Out of interest LondonTiger how many vehicles have you bought at Auction?

    I have bought several hundred.

And it is common knowledge in the trade that auction fees have been on the up.

And why are you talking about 2008/9 vans, does British Gas keep them that long?

I have not seen a British Gas van nearly 8years old still being used by BG.

Another place to try for the OP is The Auctioneers in Merthy Tydfill.

They have a decent selection of commercial vehicles, I know a bloke that buys all his Ambulances there for his Company.

    He has no complaints.
