Gas end electricity units used during the winter?
Hi, I'm new to the forum and just after a bit of advice please.
Basically I have recently fitted a log burning Stove and wondering if I am using the correct amount of gas considering?
So I am just wondering, roughly how many units gas/elec do people use per day/month.
I live in a 1940's 3 bed semi, partner works from home so in the house most days, have a gas range hob and elec oven, dishwasher goes on every day and dryer and washing machine go on approx 4 times per week.
I have just checked and in the past 84 days (since dec 1st) and used 2596 units (approx 30 each day) and 1116 units of elec (approx 13 each day).
I'm just wondering what other people are using in order to compare with.
Any help much appreciated
Danny

How long is a piece of string!
There are so many variables base on house size, gas boiler efficiency, thermostat settings and so on and so forth...
However....looking at your figures, as a rough estimation:
Your electric use of 13KWH per day sounds resonable for this time of year.
Your Gas is a different story.
With regard to your 30 Gas units, have you already converted that to KWH? Or is that 30 meter units calculated from actual meter readings?
If it is a straight meter reading and your meter is an m3 (meters cubed) meter, then 30 units per day is a lot. That would equate to 336KWH per day!
This is more than 3 times my use and I have a very inefficient boiler. I am already at the high end of Gas use!
If that 30 units is actually 30 KWH and you have already converted it, that it is nice low use for this time of year!0 -

Comparing usage in this way is like comparing mpg in a car. It depends on the size of the car, driving style etc.
If your question is 'will a log burning stove save me money' then the answer is an emphatic No. Wood isn't as cheap as it was 5 years ago, and any cost analysis has to take into the account the annual cost of the chimney sweep. We live in a large 5 bed property with Gas CH and 21 radiators. My wood cost per year is about £300 and chimney sweep £60. (Use anything but kiln dried wood and you should have the chimney swept at least once mid season). We warm the house during the day with the CH (cost yesterday 88p) and turn the stove on in the evenings. Our annual cost for gas for CH and cooking is now down to £300.
All that said, we still love our wood-burning stove. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I live in lincolnshire and it is everywhere and free.
It's the convenience factor.
You've got to collect it (there's a cost in fuel to drive the car to wherever the free wood is), dry it, chop it and stack it ready for use. That takes time. When I was a child I remember doing all of that but these days people are too busy living their lives that they would rather pay someone else to do that for them.
£300 for a whole season of wood isn't too bad for a couple tonnes of wood. That would be a large trailer load delivered and stacked for you.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.
