Halifax Clarity Additional Cardholder Questions

I've had a Halifax Clarity credit card for a few months now in preparation for an upcoming trip to the US. I'm now starting to think about having a back-up plan incase there is any problems with the card while over there and one option is adding my other half as an additional cardholder on my account. Can anyone tell me if his card would have exactly the same number as mine? I've seen contrasting information - some say it will, some say it won't so would like to find out from anyone who has added an additional cardholder recently.

Also, if his card number would be the exact same as mine then what would happen if say my card was cloned while over there - I'm assuming we would have to cancel both cards completely?

From first hand experience, I can tell you that the cards will have different numbers and are even treated separately when informing Halifax of a trip abroad. Remember though that if a block is applied to the account then both cards will be blocked.

A better strategy is to have two cards, one Visa and one Marstercard, each from different suppliers.

Our Halifax Clarity cards where renewed last month, our old cards had the same numbers, the new ones are different, when I queried it with the Halifax they stated that all additional card holders will be different numbers in future so that in case of any misuse the main card holder can be made aware of which card has been used for any transactions.
  • Great, thank you! This may be the best option then :)
  • Make sure you tell Halifax your travel dates. You can do this online.

Then it's a case of backup card after backup card. Your additional cardholder idea might make spending overseas easier, but don't rely on it as a fix if your card fails you.

    I take:

    Travelex SuperCard Visa
    BA Amex
    Barclaycard Amex
    Barclaycard Visa
    Halifax Platinum MasterCard
    Halifax Visa debit
    Santander Visa debit

Only the top one will ensure fee free exchange rates for cash and purchases (like your clarity) but I'm sure as hell going to be disappointed if all of my back up cards fail me.

An incentivised MasterCard might be taken out before my next trip.

Or just get a second Clarity, either for your partner or yourself. I've now got 2, I use one for purchases and the other for cash.

But a block can be applied to the card and not to the account.
    (Speaking from experience)
That is why it is a v good idea that they give the cards different numbers.

Even so, having a completely separate card as a backup is also a good plan...
