Hi all,

I'm doing an account switch which requires a minimum of two active direct debits. My concern is that I switched the direct debits over to an account to be used for the switch but no money has as yet gone out on those direct debits. I wanted to be sure I'd meet the conditions, the direct debits are valid e.g. they're for things like electric and gas, phone bill etc. but no payments have come out of the 'temp switch' account as yet so worry they might not be seen as active?

Please can someone advise as I've just started the switch process?

Many thanks

Several 'opinions', not definitions, have previously been expressed on here. A couple of mine...

An "active DD" is a DDI (direct debit instruction) that has been lodged with your bank so that, if called upon to do so, will successfully remove funds from your account.

An "active DD" is one which is not dormant, ie not lapsed as it's not been paid for 13 months (or whatever other timescale is set by your bank).

Someone recently posted a link to a reliable source which gave a better definition, but I can't find it from a quick search. Maybe you have more time than me to look for it? You could also google, as I've just done...maybe you'll have more luck than I had.

After 8 years you have to know that it's a bad manner to delete a post after it was replied to and that there is no anybody around to act on your request " Please delete".

To be fair to the OP, I was probably still typing when they deleted it.

But it is bad manners to keep something to yourself when you're asking others to do exactly the opposite!

You are right: deleted at 6:12 - before your post at 6:15.

    My apologies to the OP.

Wow - I made the change and minutes later got all the replies in my e-mail!
Thanks for the responses, I deleted this as I thought it might have been a bit of a daft question and I asked before doing any proper research. I called the bank and they considered it to just be a direct debit on the account. I was concerned that they might not deem it active unless they could see evidence that money had been withdrawn from the old account via that direct debit in recent months or similar. So having changed my direct debits over just in the last month within days of opening the temporary account seems hopefully to be valid for the switcher bonus.
Thanks for the responses, appreciate those :) I did check first to see there were no replies and then found it wasn't possible to delete the posting.
I do worry about posting publicly about these little tricks too, I wonder how the banks react to this kind of activity as I'm sure they don't appreciate people opening an account only to close it again shortly after to get money from another bank. I can imagine that there will be more clauses to come as they catch on to these tricks since they set it so that you have to close the old account.

eg the latest Co-op switching incentive, which requires at least 4 direct debits to be switched. That won't stop many of us on here though.

It's hard to think of what more they could do, short of demanding a BACS Direct Credit (from wages, benefits, pension, etc) and gas, electric, water, and council tax DDs. And I can't see that ever happening!

That's not a switching incentive, that's their everyday rewards scheme. I "enabled" it on my existing co-op account which has 4 DD's. No switching.
