NI Class 2 - when to pay?

Hi,
I registered as self employed in autumn 2015. Things are going OK and I expect to do my self assessment for this tax year on or after April 6th, but, I'm confused as to the wording on the govt site regarding when I can/should pay Class 2 National Insurance.
In my mind, I expect to get a payment request from HMRC for NI which will cover the current financial year. Having not gone through the process before, I am worried that this payment request might be for setting up payment for the next year ahead and that I won't be able to pay NI for this last year.
The govt page for paying NI class 2 says "HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will send you a payment request every April."
Is this for the year just completed or to set up payment for the next year?
I expected to pay it in one lump.
Have I got this all a bit twisted? and if I have, what would you advise?
Thank you as ever for any help given.

The system changed from last year, so you will not know what to pay until you do your first tax return. So tax return April 16 will be for 2015 -2016 and then it will tell you about class 2 then for the same period0
