Open university - any grants?

First post, so I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place... but I have enrolled onto a course for Open University starting later this year. A friend who goes to a bricks and mortar uni said I may be entitled to a grant called Parents Learning Allowance or something along those lines as I have a son. Is this applicable for open university or just bricks and mortar universities? If it matters, I'll be doing a 3 year course

I think you only get that if you get a maintainance loan which you don't get with the OU- sorry.

OU is usually part time study (even if you study at a full time equivalent level) and as it is distance learning you won't get grants, because the costs usually associated with studying in a brick uni don't usually apply.

Maintenance loans are apparently going to be introduced for part-time students (there will probably more information in the upcoming budget), it might be worth waiting to start until after the loans are made available.

Go to the "GOV.UK " website and search for "Student finance" There is a PDF file available there with a title like "Part-time Grants Guide for 2015/16"
