HSBC are in the right. Using Paypal means you lose the S75 protection: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/credit-cards/PayPal-Section75

The fraud claim or another action against the company are the only options.

...My last direct contact with them was in September. They have stopped responding to me and it seems other customers as well. In January I attempted to dispute this purchase with HSBC, ...
I can't believe that it took you so long to contact HSBC.

Regardless of Paypal in the middle you still could initiate chargeback within 120 days after the promised delivery date.
  • Could you not raise a dispute with PayPal directly? I don't know what their timelines would be for entertaining a dispute but suggest doing it quickly if you're not already too late.

....I also contacted Paypal who said nothing could be done because we were outside of their protection window ...

  • Some credit card companies will still look at your Section 75 claim if you can show that the payment made via paypal went to the merchant (usually the statement will show the name of the Paypal user the payment was sent to - or you could obtain this from your Paypal account). Tesco Bank are one of the companies that will look at these claims. Obviously HSBC don't really want to look at your claim but if you can show without doubt where the funds went then it's worth a shot going back to HSBC and put a little more pressure on them to look at it.

They might still say no but if you dont ask, you dont get! :)

Is it a business purchase? I suspect that a 2.5k 3D printer is business related so S75 wouldn't work in any case.

Why do people insist on buying expensive items such as this from dodgy websites who only accept paypal?
This is not the first post of this nature.
Next time buy from a well known name and avoid paypal.
Is the company you have purchased from actually in the UK? 99% sure it is not so you have lost your money.
