Pet insurance

Options
My dog was recently ill, he ate something poisonous while out on a walk and resulted him been rushed to the vets. Anyway 3 days later and a bill of £ 700. I do have pet insurance, £ 65 excess and 10% of total bill.
I paid vets upfront and have to claim it back.
My question is do you think they will put his premiums up for making a claim, he is only 4yrs so I have a lot of years ahead of me. I am wondering whether to claim or not.

Thanks

  • If you're with Petplan they tend not to increase premiums because of claims (I'm with them, and have claimed approx. £5k for one of my cats, with barely any increase on the annual premium)
That said, regardless of who you're with, even if you don't make a claim, you will still have to disclose the issue you have had when you renew next year, so I don't think there's any financial benefit to you not claiming. HTH

They may put the premium up. Assuming your dog lives to 14...i.e another 10 years they'd have to increase it by more than about £7.50 a month for you to be worse off. That's quite a hefty increase and very unlikely for an average claim.

I have to ask what's the point of taking out insurance if you were more than willing to pay in the first place. The average claim is only around £650 which this is. https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/do-you-need-pet-insurance Source: Association of British Insurers, 2013

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Hi , I had a similar situation with my dog last year. Our treatment came to just under £900 which we paid and claimed back. I didn't notice a significant change in premium.
When the auto renewal came through it was marginally higher so I searched online for a cheaper quote. My insurers actually quoted a lower premium through a comparison site so I rang them and they matched it.
My dog is 13 and so I had expected a huge hike.

Happy MJ you have answered my own question. I keep thinking why have I got insurance if I don't want to claim!!

I am going to put claim through., keep fingers crossed it doesn't effect future premium s.
