Help - all of a sudden we are no longer on the electoral register despite having been

Lived in our current home ten years. Always been on the electoral role and always had voting cards and voted. Have, today, paid deposit on a large purchase (car) and having always had perfect credit had rather a shock when soft searches whilst hunting for best rate drew a blank.

Having investigated and signed up for Experian it shows we are not on the electoral role! Council website shows this too! What on earth can have happened and how can I get it sorted fast? We will lose the deposit and the car if we can't sort it this week.

Help!

  • Contact your council in the first instance.

Then follow up with the CRAs as required.

the system has changed recently so you need to individually register rather then the previous one, where the householder could do it for all residents.

    phone the council tomorrow

We've both applied online today to be on the register and emailed the council but the automated reply to the email says minimum of 5 working days to reply to emails. The info I can find online says can take 2 months or more to get on the register then onto your credit file! Seems fair enough for initial registration but given we've been on it and for some unknown reason have dropped off I'm wondering if there is a way to speed it up. Will try calling the council in the morning.

I too wonder how this happens when each time I've had no issues voting, yet my files (ex experian) never featured my later addresses.

I think this was my major issue with getting credit, it's only in recent years my addresses have been updated. it could just be a lax council!

as of 2015 and I guarantee 90% people don't even know the new system.

the past is VERY relevant when your credit files don't update and it essentially looks as if you're lying on applications.

Essentially you can 'register to vote' but the council won't update the electoral role in the process and/or they can just 'remove you' if you 'don't confirm details' which you never knew you had to do.

The council told me that we ARE on the roll! We have both spoken to Experian and they had the address written slightly differently so hadn't matched it up. They have said it is now amended and if we log back in after 9am tomorrow it will show.

Do you think if we then do loan application tomorrow morning that any searches done to check us will be ok? Regarding the address I mean? ie Are the searches done in real time?

This is the problem i have with these files and company reporting. None of them receive all info on you. and this is disastrous with such people that only use 1 CRA.

I have to avoid anyone that JUST uses Equifax.

    Most don't, thankfully.

I had an error on my report several years ago.
Apparently I had a credit card since I was 8 years old, with a 20k limit. I was also dead according to Equifax.

They'd clearly transposed my data with my late father's but but it wasn't taken into consideration when I worked for a bank or a stockbrokers.

    Logic prevails?

They are a CRA. To them truth is irrelevant, it's all about the money they can scam out of us. The more info that is incorrect the more they con us into spending with them. They have virtually unregulated control over all our lives and we let them, even help them get away with it.
