I am trying to convert my LARGE amount of Thunderbird emails to Outlook 2013.
I have converted them using Aid4mail Mbox converter (free !!) to convert the email back up to .eml - which Outlook can view, but only when I select a single email. It is unable to import a whole load of them (5000 +)
How do I import them as an entity ?
Do I need to convert the .EML's to .PST ?

The free method involves importing all the mail into Windows Live Mail first. Have you done this?
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Just reading the same instructions as you I guess. WLM imports the EMLs and then export to an Outlook profile...

I would have thought that OUTLOOK could do anything that WLM could do and much more
    I can't find WLM anyway - when I try - end up with Outlook.com - ie) Hotmail !!
OK I am downloading essentials 2012 now !

The messy workaround is using IMAP folders using Outlook.com or Gmail accounts.

Create new account and in the settings turn on IMAP.

in Thunderbird enter the IMAP details in the "IMAP tab in settings/preferences.

Copy local emails to IMAP folder (do a small bunch at a time since large amount can cause a timeout which takes ages to clear!)

Then in Outlook 2013 enter the same IMAP details and copy from the IMAP folder into the local Outlook folder.

    it's slow!

    Why would you think that?

Outlook is primarily a commercial email client aimed at businesses who operate things somewhat differently to home users.

Outlook moved into people's homes mainly because they had it at work and were familiar with it.

I've been down this route myself and while it can be done for free I found the solutions offered time consuming. In the end I bought a migration tool to do it all automatically.

I can't remember what it was called but it only cost a few dollars, less than $10 I seem to remember. I pointed it at Thunderbird and Outlook and it just did it.

Since then I've abandoned Outlook and moved back to Apple Mail on my Mac. Not because I prefer Apple Mail but because it does the job and it is perfectly integrated with all the other Mac software. Outlook was integrated but not so perfectly.

Let us know how you get on.

I wonder why you would even bother? While I use Outlook on my work laptop it's get few if any advantages over Thunderbird that I use for personal emails.

Using IMAP from the start would have eliminated this problem

My Thunderbird installation has been freezing for the last few weeks - I have reinstalled it - but is is still causing me trouble - and since I have Office 2013 installed, I thought that I may as well use Outlook...
