Unexpected PPI Refund received.

Hi, received a pleasant surprise this morning to log into my bank account and see that I have received a transfer of over £1000 from an account that came up as "PPI9204574". I'm certainly not complaining, but I thought it was very odd as I didn't have any outstanding claims for PPI, and 4 years ago I had successfully reclaimed a similar amount of PPI from Lloyds and closed the case.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be a mistake on whoever made the payment's behalf? If so, can they legally reclaim it?

Many thanks!

  • If you've been paid in error then of course they can legally reclaim it.

However, since this is unlikely, set your mind at rest by asking the Bank what it pertains to. May have been part of your original complaint that the Bank have decided was underpaid.

    Hi,

I had a refund in January 2013 from Lloyds/Bank of Scotland for PPI on a credit card, then 2 weeks ago received a letter from Lloyds completely out the blue, telling me they had underpayed and that I'd be receiving a cheque for roughly the same amount again.

I've had absolutely no correspondance with Lloyds in the intervening 4 years.

It sounds like this is what has happened to you.

    FD.

Very likely. Of course, Reigatian80 should confirm this before doing any spending...
  • Well as mentioned, it might be wise to check. The ref is that PPI number. Chances are that they have just re reviewed your claim and decided you were not paid enough first time.

You are meant to get the letter before the payment is made, but .......
  • Lucky guys - nice start to the week.

However, does this mean we should be contacting banks again where we were previously paid out, or just wait and see?

also another question i have just found the original paperwork for the payment protection my daughter was forced to take out for a loan back in 2002 with the Woolwich. She was living at home at the time and did this in a face to face with the Woolwich where she was told the PPI was mandatory to secure the loan. Is it too late for her to claim this back?

No. Banks are not routinely reviewing old cases and Lloyds is an exception in paying additional sums. Lloyds were forced to re-visit some complaints by the regulator who found fault with the complaint handling processes used by a private firm the Bank employed. Those affected will be contacted directly.

If you feel the PPI was mis-sold then send a complaint and present your evidence.
