esuhl - thank you. you live and learn, the +/- thing is great, i've only had a PC for 20 years so not had chance to know about that yet.

getmore4less - yes, ive had a twin screen setup, 2 x 21.5" screens but one broke last year. the setup worked well but was looking if one bigger screen would work like 2 smaller ones. more food for thought again.

Mr_Toad - thank you. i have a i5-3570k which provides an integrated HD4000GC which appears to support 1920x1200 max through hdmi. i am not into gaming so wont be investing in a GC. the last GC card i had was a 8600GT but at the time i updated my PC i seem to remember my research telling me the hd4000 was at least as good as the 8600 for when i do play the odd bit of C&C generals.

i am going to do a bit more research now before deciding which way to proceed but for interest and to seek opinions the 2 i was debating between were:

    Iiyama ProLite X2783HSU-B1
    BenQ GW2760HS

the BenQ has loads of variants but the HS seemed best.

    thank you all.

No worries -- you can also hold down CTRL and use the mouse wheel to increase/decrease the size if that's easier.

I don't know anything about those particular monitors, but I've been very happy with my BenQ G2420HDBL. I see the BenQ one above also doesn't have an adjustable stand. I bought this VESA stand, which gives you more control to set the height at the right level (and it frees up a bit of desk space):

You don't need a fantastic video card to run a 4k monitor. If you play games you may have to use 1920x1080 instead of 4k, but a 4k desktop can be run by most mid-ranged video cards.

2560x1440 is ok with most onboard chips but would probably need a "dual link" dvi lead - my old PC managed this fine. If you are getting a graphics card it makes sense to get one with displayport if possible as the leads are less fiddly.

HDMI is limited to 1920x1080 and is more aimed at plugging in games consoles or connecting a PC to a TV screen

    Currently using a 22" @ 1920x1080
    Was about to buy a 27" @ 1920x1080
An easy way to get your head around this is to realize that the larger monitor has the same number of pixels, just spaced out more (or slightly larger). This must mean that if you viewed the same output at the same time but with the larger screen a certain distance further away, your experience of each would be identical.

Not quite true. HDMI 1.4 can support upto 4k resolution at 30fps
HDMI 2.0 can support 4k at 60fps (although both the monitor and graphics card must support HDMI 2.0)
