M2TS converter for youtube

My nephew has a Startech game recorder which records on M2TS format, he would like to upload his videos to youtube so needs to convert the format. Have spent ages looking for a free converter but all the ones we've tried have around a 5 minute time limit and then ask for payment to upgrade. Can anyone point me in the direction of a free full version of a converter.

The free ffmpeg is amazing for converting audio/video files. I'm pretty sure it'll convert .m2ts files into something that YouTube can handle, but you might need to have a search of the web to find the appropriate syntax:
