So their faulty EGR will have nothing to do with the emission scandal? Not even a teeny weeny bit..

Only if the OP has been driving his car for extended periods on a single axle rolling road doing US emissions tests.

Since that is the only time the cheat software actually works.

The biggest cause of EGR/DPF problems is using diesels for short runs or stop/start driving.
Driving style is a big factor. Far fewer EGR issues in countries like Spain and Italy, because they give their cars some welly.

When I was there it was only the Brits, myself included, that had issues. My mechanic told me off for being far too gentle with my car...

After that I drove like a Spaniard and never needed my EGR cleaning again.

If you plan to keep the car for a long time, there's the possibility the EGR will fail again. It seems the solenoid that controls it fails, rather than it getting gunked up with carbon deposits.

I'd speak to Darkside Developments (Google for official site or search on Facebook). They can supply and fit a kit which removes the EGR valve so you won't have problems with it again. The ECU is also flashed to ignore the EGR valve sensor. Price for all this is roughly the same if not cheaper than a replacement which will surely fail again.

I can believe this, in the UK people only seem to give it some welly when they're being overtaken.

The problem is owners are taken in by cheap tax and 50mpg on Diesel engines, the problem is the short runs they typically do are not suitable for this sort of engine and the subsequent problems become expensive.

The same goes for long life servicing regimes, they are designed for a type of driving style, the typical UK driver should be following the alternative 12 month/shorter distance regime.

The cleaner the fuel, the cleaner the air (air filter) and the warmer the engine gets the cleaner the engine will run.

I've run diesels for years now with no issues, I know others who have as well, I also know a few who regularly have problems, there is a clear pattern in driving styles and thoughts on servicing regimes.
  • You've probably had it done now, but - Audi just replaced mine free of charge on my 2011 A3. I mentioned the emission update and said i believed it was linked. They did a fault check on the car but at the time it only came up with a glow plug fault which they stated they would do free of charge as a good will gesture! Unfortunately (for them) it broke off in the cylinder head. They ended up replacing the complete head! Upon checking the system again once this was complete - the Egr fault came back. This was replaced no questions asked all free of charge! I didn't buy the car from Audi and have never had it serviced there! From what i've been told VW/Audi don't want any more bad press hence them footing the very large bill!
  • If you had the emissions ‘fix’ within two years, you can have your VW, Seat or Skoda fixed for free.

Call the UK customer services, not a dealer.

They will give you a reference number and then you can book it in for free at a local dealership. This is because the fix gives you two years warranty. I just squeaked in with two months to spare.

Makes you think the emissions court case has more ammunition.
