npower prepayment meter has final bill?

Options
Hi all,
We are on prepayment meters, and recently changed our supplier for electricity from npower to ovo, because ovo have come in and fitted smart meters so no more having to go to the shops for top ups :j

This morning we got a letter from npower saying we had £130 to pay them. Are they allowed to do this? We are on a prepayment meter so we pay before we use the electricity. All our payments from our key are on the bill, but apparently the debt is from a previous statement. They don't even have my name (everything is to "the occupier")

Thanks!

Perhaps the prepay meter was set up to cover debt but you hadn't paid that debt off in which case npower are quite entitled to ask for payment. You need to work out whether the debt is yours or not. Hiding behind saying they don't know your name is unlikely to work.
  • Theres no debt, the meters were here when we moved in; there was debt left by the previous occupants though, but we rang npower and explained and apparently it was all sorted?

"All Sorted" ? - This is n'power you are dealing with, and what they say and what they do are two entirely different things.

Ask them to put this in writing and when they fail to do so, you WRITE to them confirming the telecon and thanking them for sorting the matter out
  • not only can you have debts from former credit meter accounts but daily standing charge debt can build up considerably.Best of luck with your new Ovo smart meter, the problems begin when you ve had enough of them and want them out

You need to establish what the £130 is for. It could be for the previous occupant's debt or it could be something else. Npower have a terrible reputation for billing errors and an even worse one for fixing them.
