Moving into new flat- just stick with previous occupants utility companies?

Do I need to get my utility bills of previous owner of my now flat changed to my name soon? Got flat yesterday.

He was with British Gas for electricity lol?

Also for internet who should I go with? Don't want cheap if connection isn't very good! Definitely want a good connection but not that bothered about landline phone and extra TV channels.

How about the TV licence?

  • Yes you need to get the electricity in your name immediately.

Take a meter reading and phone British Gas and get the electricity account set up. Give them the reading you just took.

They will put you on a standard tariff so use price comparison websites and look for better prices and switch accordingly.

(use a camera and take a photograph the meter reading for future reference)

Get the electricity in your name immediately, but do not sign up to a fixed-tariff! Then do a price comparison and switch to whoever's best for you.

Take a meter reading ASAP and email it to yourself (so you have a dated copy, in case of arguments later), ideally email it to the utility company too (British Gas)

For the internet it's typically hard to beat Sky, but if Virgin is available in your area they can be good too, or check out the smaller suppliers. I'd avoid BT and TalkTalk. Go for fibre if you can justify the cost, it's much faster and far more reliable

You have no option but to have B Gas initially as you will be on a 'deemed tariff' and this will be at their most expensive standard rate.

You can instigate switching procedures immediately, but it will take some weeks. Almost certainly there will be much cheaper options than B Gas.

Everyone has different opinions about an internet provider, If you look on this forum you will read 'horror stories' about all the major providers. Personally I have been very happy with BT Infinity and friends have had nothing but trouble with Sky - so have moved to BT. However I expect many people will have had the opposite experience.
